With “Butterflies and Caterpillars”, photographer Ardelle Schneider provides an undisguised insight into the current drag scene in the USA. Among other things, the photographic exploration deals with the meaning of identity and the construction of a self beyond gender-specific role expectations. Over an extended period of time, Schneider accompanied the protagonists in their everyday lives and photographed them in private moments as well as during their performances. In addition to the act of transformation, the duality of those portrayed is also addressed, as their self-presentation and self-image repeatedly collide with society's expectations.
Does clothing change our behavior, and to what extent does the outer shell reveal a person's character? To what extent does outward appearance influence our effect on others? What is hidden behind all the layers of tulle and make-up? Schneider uses intimate and sensitive images to reveal the subtleties and nuances of the characters hidden behind the loud masquerade. With a keen sense of intimacy and careful lighting direction, he has created images full of intimacy, dignity and strength. A book as a monument to acceptance and mutual respect.
